There are some sessions that remind me exactly why I tell my graduates to set the alarm clock.
This was one of them.
One of my trusted Washington, DC associates, Justin, photographed this incredible graduation session while I was away, and honestly... he absolutely nailed it. Justin has been part of my team because I trust him to photograph the way I would! He has an eye for architecture, clean compositions, and moments that feel effortless. Why Sunrise Sessions Are Always Worth It

6:30 a.m. sounds like a terrible life choice.
Until you see the photos.
Washington, DC is one of the busiest cities in the country, especially around graduation season. By shooting at sunrise, we get something that's almost impossible later in the day:
Empty monuments
Soft, flattering light
No tourists wandering through the background
Marble that actually photographs white instead of reflecting harsh afternoon sun
Instead of spending half the session waiting for people to move, we spend it creating images.
The quiet morning also gave Justin the freedom to create some stunning wide-angle portraits that really showcase the scale of the memorial while still keeping the graduate the focus.
Two Iconic Washington, DC Locations
After finishing at the Jefferson Memorial, they headed to the Supreme Court.
It's one of those locations I don't think gets enough attention for graduation portraits.
The combination of the Jefferson Memorial and the Supreme Court gives you two completely different looks without feeling repetitive.
One feels open, classic, and airy.
The other feels bold, powerful, and iconic.
For doctoral graduates especially, it's hard to imagine a more fitting location.
The Difference Great Light Makes
One thing I loved about this gallery is how the morning light wrapped around everything.
The marble almost glows.
The navy dress and doctoral regalia pop against the white architecture.
The greens in the background stay rich without overpowering the image.
Nothing feels forced or over-edited, it just feels clean, timeless, and exactly how Washington should look.
