Graduation Photos in Washington DC (Done Right) | National Mall Guide
Washington DC Graduation Photographer | National Mall Graduation Photos Guide
Graduation season in Washington DC is one of my favorite times to photograph sessions. The city fills up with caps, gowns, proud families, and that very specific mix of exhaustion and excitement that comes with finishing a degree.
If you’re planning graduation photos in DC, the National Mall is easily one of the most iconic places to celebrate the moment. Between the monuments, the museums, and the classic DC architecture, it’s hard to beat as a backdrop.
This guide covers everything you should know before booking graduation photos on the National Mall — from locations and timing to permits and what to wear.
Why the National Mall is Perfect for Graduation Photos
The National Mall is basically a greatest-hits list of DC landmarks. Within a short walking distance you get:
The Lincoln Memorial
Jefferson Memorial
The Washington Monument
The U.S. Capitol
The Reflecting Pool
Smithsonian museums
Tree-lined paths and gardens
What I love about photographing here is the variety. In one session we can capture classic monument photos, editorial-style portraits, and relaxed walking shots that feel natural instead of overly posed.
And let’s be honest — if you survived finals, group projects, and whatever that one impossible class was, you deserve photos somewhere a little iconic.
Best Locations on the National Mall for Graduation Photos
There are a few locations I photograph most often during graduation sessions. Each one gives a slightly different look.
Jefferson Monument
Easily my favorite place. BOOK THIS ONE.
Lincoln Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most dramatic locations in DC. The columns and steps create a timeless backdrop that works beautifully with graduation gowns.
Early morning sessions here are usually best if you want fewer crowds.
Washington Monument
The Washington Monument is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. The open lawn around it allows for clean, classic portraits with the monument rising in the background.
This location works especially well for walking shots and celebratory “cap toss” photos.
U.S. Capitol - Library of Congress
If you want photos that feel very “DC,” the Capitol is a great option. The architecture is stunning, and it pairs perfectly with graduation attire.
Many graduates from Georgetown, GWU, Howard, and American University choose this spot for their session.
Do You Need a Permit for Graduation Photos on the National Mall?
This is one of the most common questions I get.
For most graduation portrait sessions, a permit is not required as long as the session is small and does not involve large equipment, props, or setups that block public areas.
That said, rules can change depending on location and crowd levels. I always stay aware of the current guidelines so sessions run smoothly.
Best Time of Day for Graduation Photos in DC
Timing makes a huge difference for photos on the National Mall.
The two best options are:
Early Morning
This is my top recommendation. The light is soft, the crowds are smaller, and the monuments feel a lot more peaceful.
Sunset
Golden hour creates beautiful warm light and dramatic skies. The trade-off is that it can be busier.
If you want those clean, magazine-style photos you see on Pinterest, morning sessions are usually the way to go.
What to Wear for Graduation Photos
Most graduates bring two outfits for their session.
Cap and gown with honor cords or stoles
A dress or outfit underneath for portraits without the gown
Simple, classic outfits photograph best. Neutral colors, solid fabrics, and clean silhouettes tend to age better than anything overly trendy.
And comfortable shoes are always a good idea — the National Mall involves more walking than people expect.
Graduation Sessions for DC Universities
I photograph graduation sessions for students across the DC area, including:
Georgetown University
George Washington University
Howard University
American University
University of Maryland
Many graduates choose to combine campus photos with a short National Mall session to capture both locations.
When to Book Your Graduation Photographer
DC graduation season fills up quickly.
Most sessions take place between April and early June, and the best morning and sunset times tend to book first.
If you’re planning graduation photos in Washington DC, I recommend reserving your session at least 4–6 weeks in advance.

Hi, I’m Carol — the photographer behind D’Corzo Photography. I photograph graduation sessions across Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland.
My approach is relaxed and natural, focusing on portraits that feel timeless but still like you. No awkward posing required.
Graduation is one of those milestones that deserves more than a quick phone photo with the monument in the background. If you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right.
